How does this compare with with Commonwealth funding to public schools?

FEDERAL PER CAPITA FUNDING FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS – COMPARISON WITH WEALTHIEST PRIVATE AND CATHOLIC SYSTEMIC SCHOOLS
The following table shows how much Federal funding goes to public schools from the federal government, and how much would go to public schools if they were funded on the same formula as the wealthiest private schools and Catholic systemic schools.

The public education money goes to the state government to spend. You won’t see it in school bank accounts!

The Catholic Education Office receives money for Catholic schools to distribute, and independent schools receive the money directly.

Explanation of Columns:

Enrolment (FTE) 2003 – shows primary and secondary combined. These are the official enrolment figures.

Federal funding $ - shows the amount that the public school, based on enrolments attracts from the federal government as a block grant to the state government. This money does not go direct to the school.

The per capita amounts for 2004 are – Primary: $ 539; Secondary $ 803

Wealthiest’ Private school funding

This column shows what they would get if they were one of the wealthiest private schools.

The per capita amounts are: Primary - $830; Secondary - $ 1099

Catholic systemic schools funding – This shows what each of the public schools would attract in funding if they were a Catholic systemic schools.

The per capita amounts are : Primary - $3404; Secondary - $ 4508

Additional Funding

Note that these amounts are Per Capita recurrent funding only. It does not include Special Programs such as establishment grants, capital grants, special education, Aboriginal programs, Country Area Program, Strategic assistance, ESL, Languages Other Than English, National literacy and numeracy strategies, civics and citizenship, drug education etc.

A note about Special Schools

Special schools are not included as there are other funding arrangements in place for special schools.
