3. Leave provisions For Temporary Teachers

3.1 General

This section contains policy and procedures on the leave entitlements of temporary teachers.

3.2 Calculation of Leave

  1. In most cases, temporary teachers are entitled to a pro rata amount of the annual leave entitlements that apply to permanent teachers. The pro rata entitlement is calculated based on the expected length of the temporary engagement and the number of days per week to be worked during that engagement.
  2. In other cases, temporary teacher leave entitlements are based on completed years of temporary service. Each temporary engagement is combined to determine years of temporary service. In the case of years of part time temporary service, leave entitlements are calculated on a pro rata basis.
  3. Where a leave calculation results in a fractional entitlement, the leave is rounded up to the next highest quarter day.

3.3 Granting and Debiting of Leave

  1. Leave will only be granted for periods that fall within a temporary engagement.
  2. Temporary teachers should be aware that when completing a leave form, the leave applied for should be stated in fractions of a day rather than hours.
  3. When an absence involves part of a day, leave is debited on the basis of 3, 2 or : of a day, as appropriate.

3.4 Use of Leave Entitlements

  1. Temporary teachers who undertake permanent part time and part time temporary work concurrently will accrue two leave entitlements based on the service in each type of engagement.
  2. With the exception of long service leave, leave entitlements are able to be accessed only on days that correspond with the type of engagement they were accrued under. Leave accrued as a permanent teacher can only be taken on days worked as a permanent teacher and leave accrued as a temporary teacher can only be taken on days worked as a temporary teacher.
  3. In the case of long service leave, a long service leave entitlement accrued as a permanent part time teacher may be used to take long service leave on days engaged as a temporary teacher. Payment for long service leave taken on permanent part time days will be at the permanent part time salary rate. Payment for long service leave taken on temporary days will be at the temporary teacher salary rate.
  4. Separate applications for leave must be submitted for the differing engagements.

Applications for leave for temporary work should be forwarded to Payroll Services, Blacktown State Office. Applications for leave for permanent part time work should be forwarded to Teacher Services, Newcastle State Office.
