11. Military Leave

  1. Military leave may be granted to temporary teachers who are volunteer part time members of the Defence Forces Reserves. Such leave shall not apply to attendance after working hours and shall be subject to departmental convenience.
  2. Military leave will only be granted during periods of temporary engagements.

11.1 Annual Grant Entitlements

  1. Temporary teachers shall be entitled to a pro rata amount of the following annual entitlements based on the expected length of their temporary engagement and the days worked per week.
  2. For attendance at annual training:

  • for members of the Navy Reserve - thirteen calendar days on full pay;

  • for members of the Army Reserve - fourteen calendar days on full pay;

  • for members of the Air Force Reserve - sixteen calendar days on full pay.

c) For attendance at a school, class or course of instruction:

  • for members of the Navy Reserve - thirteen calendar days on full pay;

  • for members of the Army Reserve - fourteen calendar days on full pay;

  • for members of the Air Force Reserve - sixteen calendar days on full pay.

11.2 Leave in Addition to Annual Grant

a) Where a Commanding Officer certifies in writing that it is obligatory for a member of the Reserves to attend training for a period that exceeds the leave normally available as military leave, temporary teachers may be granted further military leave not exceeding a pro rata amount of four days per annum, based on the expected length of the temporary engagement and the days worked per week.

b) Payment for this additional leave shall be at the difference between the temporary teacher's normal salary and military pay to which the temporary teacher is entitled.

c) Any further leave required in excess of that provided above may be granted as leave without pay or if available long service leave to credit.

11.3 Leave for Full Time Military Service

If it is essential for a member of the Reserves to serve full time in the Defence forces, leave may be granted at the difference between the temporary teacher's normal salary and the military payments to which the temporary teacher is entitled.

11.4 Evidence of Attendance

a) Leave applications must be accompanied by evidence of membership of the Reserves and the necessity for the leave. This documentation must be submitted prior to the leave being taken.

b) A certificate of attendance from the Defence Forces Reserves, must be forwarded to Payroll Services after the period of leave.

c) Where leave is granted at the difference between normal salary and military pay, a certificate verifying the amount of military payments received, must be submitted.
