Your message: (this letter can be changed to suit your individual circumstances)	I am writing to seek your support to develop an instrument such as a change to the Act, Regulations or an industrial agreement which will allow long term temporary TAFE teachers, and other temporary employees such as education officers, who have been continuously employed for at least two years the right to seek permanent appointment. Currently the TAFE Temporary Teachers � Conditions of Employment Policy states: �Where it is proposed to extend a TAFE Temporary Teacher position beyond two years from the date of its creation, Institutes should consider whether there is a need to create a permanent TAFE teacher position (instead of extending the TAFE Temporary Teacher position).� TAFE Temporary Teachers are appointed after a merit selection process. Significant numbers of TAFE Temporary Teachers are currently employed. Although after two years a TAFE Temporary Teacher position may become permanent, the Temporary Teacher who was been recruited to the temporary position would need to re-apply for the position if it was made permanent. As the person recruited to the temporary position would previously have been merit selected, there would be a duplication of merit selection processes that appears to be inefficient, and undermining of morale. With the recent legislative changes which have placed TAFE employees within the scope of the Public Sector Employment & Management (PSEM) Act, it seems unfair that other classifications of TAFE employees such as long term temporary administrative and support staff are be able to access the right to seek permanency under section 31 of the PSEM Act, but temporary teachers cannot. I am also concerned that in other classifications such as education officers there may be long term temporary employees. These classifications of temporary employees such as education officers are also appointed following merit selection processes and should also have the right to seek conversion to permanency. I believe that it is only equitable for the Labor Government to provide long term temporary TAFE teachers and other related employees with a right to seek permanency consistent with section 31 of the PSEM Act. I seek your support in this matter, and look forward to your response.
