TAFE Part Time Casual Teachers Campaign

Campaigns TAFE Part Time Casual Teachers Resources

The Part time Casual TAFE Teachers S.I.G.

14 August 2003

The Federations’ PTC Special Interest Group (SIG) discusses and acts on a wide range of issues relating to the employment conditions of PTCs in TAFE, brought to its attention by active PTC teacher members as well as non-attending members.

Decisions carried at the SIG are forwarded to TAFE TA Executive for further discussion and/or action. It is the only group within the NSWTF which solely represents the interests of TAFE Part Time Casual Teachers.

The current SIG Committee comprises a dedicated group of Part Time Casual TAFE teachers whose goal is to further the interests of all TAFE PTC teachers.

Josie Keeley, a SIG member, is also the Part Time Casual Teacher Representative on TAFE TA Executive. A number of SIG members are TAFE TA Councillors and others Federation Councillors, representing PTC interests at these levels.

Membership is voluntary with provision for corresponding members, unable to attend or geographically isolated, to contribute and participate.

The SIG meets about 6 to 8 times a year and the TAFE TA Secretary, Federation Officers and Organisers frequently attend meetings to provide reports on various issues affecting PTCs.

Federation assists SIG members with reasonable travel costs (excluding air) for attending meetings on receipt of claims at the end of each calendar year. Minutes of meetings are forwarded to all members' private addresses.

Issues and events, which the SIG has initiated and/or supported within TAFE TA and Federation, include:

  • TAFE PTC Parliamentary Information Open Day
  • Lobbying Members of the NSW Parliament
  • Addressing regional Trades Hall Councils
  • "There's nothing casual about teaching" (Red Sticker) Day
  • The Staffing Agreement (the SIG has a member on the NSWTF negotiating team)
  • The PTC pro rata award variation (a member on NSWTF negotiating team)
  • The delayed first wage payment of Semester 1 each year
  • Conditions of PTCs working for TAFE overseas
  • The Inquiry into the Provision of Public Education by Professor Tony Vinson
  • Discussion with political parties regarding their Education Policy
  • Organising a Teleconference to allow those unable to physically attend meetings to have a say in their future in TAFE (more are planned)
  • Standardising payment of Related Duties across Institutes
  • A more equitable membership fee structure for PTCs
  • Activists' training days
2003 is a particularly critical year for Part Time Casual teachers with their Pro-Rata (Equal pay for equal work) case coming before the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW.
