Campaigns UNICEF Day for Change NewsUNICEF Day for ChangeDay for Change launch 04 July 2006SYDNEY, Tuesday July 4, 2006 UNICEF Australia President Ian Carroll today welcomed an unprecedented partnership between UNICEF Australia, the NSW Teachers Federation and the NSW Department of Education and Training.
The UNICEF Day for Change will be held to celebrate Universal Childrens Day on October 25, 2006. Speaking at the annual NSW Teachers Federation conference, Mr Carroll said UNICEF worked on the ground in 155 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. This world is one where over 115 million children are still out of school. Where every day over 30,000 children die from preventable causes and where every minute of every day a child dies from AIDS, he said. With over 700,000 children attending public schools in NSW, the UNICEF Day for Change creates the opportunity to raise enough money make a real and lasting difference to some of UNICEFs projects for childrens health and welfare. A donation of just $1 will buy five children a pencil and exercise book. NSW Minister for Education and Training, Carmel Tebbutt, said the involvement of public schools highlighted the fact that access to quality education was one of the keys to eradicating poverty. The UNICEF Day for Change will help create a greater awareness among NSW students of the importance of education and challenges faced by students in more disadvantaged parts of the world, Ms Tebbutt said. I would like to thank everyone involved in making this day happen. Angelo Gavrielatos, Deputy President of the NSW Teachers Federation said the UNICEF Day for Change is an extension of the core values that underpin public schools and encourages student leaders to work with fellow students to raise awareness of their role as global citizens. Students in public schools across NSW will not only donate change to make a change but they will reflect on the plight of many children across the globe and the role they can play to build a better world, said Mr Gavrielatos.
