Parental Leave Campaign
Campaigns Parental Leave Resources

Draft letter to Members of Parliament

26 March 2010

Dear __________

Renewed debate about the provisions of Australias first legislated paid parental leave is welcome. In the best interests of babies and their families, who often find it difficult to balance work and family, I urge you to adopt legislation before the federal election is called.

The legislation should include:

  • 26 weeks paid leave
  • payment of superannuation
  • provision of at least two weeks partner leave
  • full income replacement
  • easy workforce participation criteria for eligibility
  • greater flexibility for parents including half pay leave
  • accrual of all entitlements
  • provision for long term foster carers.

Any legislation should be in place to ensure implementation from 1 January 2011.

Such legislation would ensure Australia had one of the best paid parental leave schemes in the world. Our babies and their families would have the best start in life.

Yours sincerely
