Student Reports - Faxstream to all Schools

17 March 2006

The Federation maintains its advice that schools should continue to use their own reporting system and not comply with the DET memorandum dated 9 February 2006.

The Federation and the Department have not resolved the dispute about "Student Reports". The DET discontinued its action in the Industrial Relations Commission before the dispute was resolved.

The memorandum from Trevor Fletcher dated 10 March 2006 pretends that the dispute is over. It is not. The seven items listed in Mr Fletcher's memorandum of 1 March 2006 have not been resolved and are not even mentioned in his memorandum of 10 March 2006. Those items included, for example: implementation timeline, use of the A-E scale, application of the A-E grading to Years 1-2, application of the A-E grading to all KLAs in primary schools, and clarification of how reporting will apply to ESL (new arrivals, phase 1, etc) students and students with intellectual disabilities.

This issue is a national one. Teachers in some other states have banned the new reports.

Federation is seeking to negotiate a framework of report options from which a school can make professional decisions about which report format best suits the needs of its students.
