Letter to Parents, Parliamentary Brief, and Dispute Chronology

04 March 2008

The attached documents were sent to schools on 26 February, 2008. Please find attached staffing campaign information for use in your school community:

  • copy of Parliamentary Brief
  • letter to parents and carers
  • copy of Teachers Federation letter to the Department (February 21, 2008)
  • chronology of the staffing dispute to date.
Further material will be available in a Campaigns Kit to be distributed to schools early in March.

Members are urged to support this campaign.

  1. Present the Federation's case for the maintenance of the current staffing system to your school's parents and carers, through the distribution of copies of the enclosed letter and/or by addressing a school Parents & Citizens meeting. Parents and carers should be reassured that we are seeking a negotiated settlement to this dispute, as outlined in our correspondence to the Department of 21 February.
  2. Use the Parliamentary Brief to contact your local state Member of Parliament to seek support for the Federation's staffing campaign. Further material was sent to MPs. This material can be found on the Federation website in the Campaigns section.
  3. Contact local media to advance the Federation's case for a new staffing agreement that maintains the current statewide system.

While the Federation is attempting to achieve a negotiated settlement on this matter, members are reminded of the following decision of State Council on 9 February:

"Federation State Council on 8 March 2008 will determine a course of sustained, state-wide political and industrial action, including Stop Work Sky Channel meetings before the end of Term One, to achieve a staffing agreement that protects teachers' rights at work and students' rights at school."

Your support for this important campaign is greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely

John Irving
General Secretary
