A promise to all Australians
By Maree O’Halloran
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has promised to govern for all Australians.
Federation congratulates new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the incoming government members on their victory and calls on them to ensure that investment to maintain education of the highest quality for children and students in Australia's public schools and TAFE colleges is made a national priority.
The defeat of John Howard's government must see the end of government deliberately extending privilege to the already privileged in our society.
On behalf of the Federation, I would like to congratulate all teachers, community and union members who campaigned tirelessly on the ACTU/Unions NSW's Your Rights at Work community campaign to defeat WorkChoices and hold those who introduced and voted for it in parliament accountable to the Australian people. The electorate has emphatically rejected the Coalition's attack on working people and the union movement.
Federation has been proud to be involved in and support the Your Rights at Work campaign over the past three years. Federation members were involved in Your Rights at Work campaign committees across NSW and also highlighted the erosion of young people's protections at work under WorkChoices.
The union movement's campaign must continue to ensure that people's rights at work are protected, WorkChoices is abolished and the ideology underpinning it is rejected entirely.
Call for new policies in the post-Howard era: Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
