Recruiters could be off to Paris
By John Dixon
Now there are even more reasons to recruit new members to Federation.
Members will now receive a $10 gift voucher for new teachers they sign up. Federation understands the importance of recruitment, particularly new teachers to the profession -- it's our best way of protecting teachers' working conditions and the other gains we have made for the public education system.
In 2008 we have three major campaigns: the next salaries campaign, the next staffing agreement and the provision of more permanent teachers. These campaigns are fundamental to teachers and the public education system. The collective strength of the union cannot be underestimated at the bargaining table.
The incentive scheme is designed to reward members who encourage and invite teachers they work with and know to become members of Federation.
Because the union recognises and values your recruitment efforts we want to appropriately reward you for taking time to talk to the new teachers, casual part-time or temporary teachers that you work with about the benefits of belonging to Federation.
How the scheme works
Any financial member of the Teachers Federation can become a recruiter.
1. Once you have recruited two new members you will be entitled to a $20 gift voucher and for every member you sign up after that you will receive a further $10 gift card. (This does not include associate members such as student teachers and retired members.)
2. Gift cards will be posted to you at the end of each term.
3. Gift cards are valid for two years and they are not deemed to be income for tax purposes.
Lucky draw travel prize for recruiters
For every member you recruit you receive an entry in Federation's special travel prize draw. For 2008 the prize is a trip for two to Paris. The prize includes two economy airfares to Paris plus seven nights accommodation in a 3-star hotel. The prize will be drawn at September Council.
Those eligible to enter the lucky travel prize draw for new members are, of course, the recruiters and the names of all new members who have joined since January 1, 2008.
But we can be even stronger!
Most teachers understand that for the profession to remain strong and viable they need a strong union to represent them.
However, we all know there are teachers working who are not members of the Federation.
Often these teachers tell us that they want to join but 'have not been invited' to do so. This is often the case with casual, part time and temporary teachers new to the school or college.
It is important for members to explain to their non member colleagues that it is the collective strength of union members which enables Federation to run large pay and conditions campaigns and negotiations, claims that all teachers working in the NSW public education system benefit from.
The new year is a great time to find out the dates of when the 2008 induction programs are taking place at your workplace. These are a great opportunity for you to talk to new teachers employed at your workplace.
Whether your workplace is large or small make sure you invite your colleagues to join and to become part of the strength of your union.
You may also know teachers who work in other schools in your town or suburb who may be interested in joining.
Let's keep our union strong and effective!
