Axing of HSC advice line condemned
By John Dixon
Federation has condemned the NSW Government for axing the $1 million HSC advice line.
President Maree O'Halloran said: "The Advice line has been used by tens of thousands of students since it was launched by the then Education Minister, Andrew Refshauge in 2003.
"It was staffed by experienced teachers and provided an opportunity for students to gain valuable help in the weeks before the HSC," she added.
"The Advice line is designed to give assistance to HSC students at the time when they are under the greatest stress.
"This government cost-cutting measure is short-sighted, small-minded and punitive. It will hurt many students. It arises because the government has directed the Board of Studies to make 'efficiency' cuts. This cut is not in the interests of NSW students.
"In a 2007 media release, the current Education Minister, John Della Bosca said the advice line was an important resource for students: 'The Iemma Government wants to ensure students are well-equipped and have access to as much support as possible during this challenging time.'
"Teachers call on Mr Della Bosca to direct the Board to reconsider its decision."
John Dixon is Assistant General Secretary (Communications and Administration).
