Classroom management skills course
By John Dixon
A course for early career teachers and those teachers who mentor them will be held on June 2.
The joint course between Federation and the University of Sydney, titled Beyond Behaviour Management - Your Classroom as a Learning Community, will be held from 9am to 4pm at the Teachers Federation Conference Centre at 37 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills.
While the course is open to all members, it has been particularly designed around the needs of early career teachers and those teachers who have responsibility for mentoring early career teachers.
The course will cover issues focused around the NSW Institute of Teachers' Elements of Teaching, such as:
- Teachers know their students and how they learn (Element 2).
- Teachers communicate effectively with their students (Element 4).
- Teachers create and maintain safe and challenging learning environments through the use of classroom management skills (Element 5).
The course will consist of speakers, panels and practical workshops.
The cost of the Classroom Management Course is $50 for financial members.
A registration form for this course can be found at http://www.nswtf.org.au/general/pro_dev.html.
For those teachers attending from non-metropolitan locations accommodation can be organised by the Federation at the Citigate Sebel Hotel, 28 Albion Street, Surry Hills (in the same locale as the conference venue). The cost of accommodation will be met by participants.
If you need accommodation please contact Laura Adamson, the Federation's Travel Coordinator on (02) 9217 2124.
The University of Sydney's Education faculty has a formidable reputation and history in the training of teachers in NSW and the providing of additional training opportunities and higher degrees for teachers.
Federation has had its Trade Union Training school operating for more than 30 years providing training in industrial/professional issues for activists.
This joint venture aims to combine the expertise of both organisations that is teacher-centred and responsive to the changing needs of our members independent of the mandated requirements of the Department of Education and Training or the Government.
A joint continuing professional development course aimed at those teachers who have responsibility for mentoring new teachers or those student teachers undertaking practicum or internships within schools was held in March. The feedback from participants in this course was overwhelmingly positive.
John Dixon is the Assistant General Secretary (Communications and Administration).
