Fund for feel-good promotion of public education
By Kerri Carr
Federation's Public Education Fund was officially launched by President Sue Simpson at Annual Conference.
Ms Simpson told how the idea for the fund had come from Camden-Campbelltown Teachers Association.
"By increasing membership fees by 0.035 percent, or about 33 cents a week or $17 a year for a full-time member, the Federation has been able to establish a fund for the specific purpose of positively promoting and advertising the professional achievements of public school and college teachers, and the public education system," she said.
"This will provide the Federation with an unprecedented opportunity to mount a sustained campaign to promote our work and the public education system."
Ms Simpson said that with governments from both sides of politics apparently intent on moving more and more students into private education, advertising and promoting public education's achievement must become an absolute priority.
"The Public Education Fund will give us an important edge in the battles ahead," she said.
"It will enable us to portray ourselves in a positive light, highlight what's best about our profession and our schools and colleges, and go some way towards building positive morale among our membership."
