Former student Tom Bass joined current students and members of Kings Cross Bikers Social and Welfare Club to protest the proposed closure of Erskineville Public School.

Bikers roar

By Kerri Carr

Members of the Kings Cross Bikers Social and Welfare Club escorted students, parents and community members who support Erskineville Public School in a convoy to Parliament House on July 2 where they presented a petition asking the Government to re-consider closure of their school.

Almost 1000 people signed the petition that was presented to Opposition Leader Kerry Chikarovski who was to present it to the Lower House.

She said the Government would have to review its decision.

Joining the procession was 87-year-old Tom Bass, a renowned sculptor, who attended Erskineville Public School 80 years ago.

Erskineville School Council president Jeni Mulvey said the school had wide community support. "The Kings Cross Bikers Social and Welfare Club and sculptor Tom Bass have chosen to participate in the protest to show the breadth of community support for our school."

Kings Cross Bikers Social and Welfare Club president "Animal" said Erskineville Public School had a proud history and a past association with the club.

"Removing the school removes the soul of the community," he said.

"We will not stand by quietly and allow that to happen."
