Teachers joined the huge peace rally in Sydney on February 16.

Peace is teacher union business

Peace is the work of teachers in NSW.

Article 29 of the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child obliges us and the Australian government, which is a signatory to the Convention, to ensure that "the education of the child shall be directed to the preparation of the child for responsible life in a free society in the spirit of understanding, peace, tolerance, equity of sexes and friendship amongst all people, national and religious groups and persons of indigenous origin". As teachers, we consider one of the fundamental responsibilities to our society and the children to whom we care.

Moreover, the registered industrial rules of the NSW Teachers Federation include in rule 1.4, Objects, section 11: "To work for and promote international disarmament and co-operation."

No war on Iraq

Labor Council supports the peace movement

The conditions for war do not exist
