Teachers Club scales down operations
By Barry Johnson
On October 20, the Board of Directors of the Teachers Club took a decision to cease continuous operation of the Teachers Club.
This decision was made in the knowledge that the club was facing a situation of uncertainty in regard to its financial circumstances.
The Club had, indeed, been experiencing difficult times since its move from Sussex Street to the new premises in Surry Hills, without the patronage attracted by the Federation's operation of an auditorium.
This decision of the Board of Directors was reported to the Federation's Executive on the October 21.
The Executive indicated its support for the continued operation of the Teachers Club, although on a restricted basis until the construction and opening of the new auditorium. The club will continue in existence but for the immediate future it will operate as a function centre. It is anticipated that the club will open for the meetings of Federation Council and during Annual Conference in 2004. It will also be available for hire for outside functions as well as being used to support special functions organised by the Federation.
I want to assure members of the Club and members of the Federation that the facility has a future.
The Board of Directors has made a decision that current members will have continuity of membership. I am advised that the club will write to individual members in the near future and we can all look forward to a successful reopening of the club when the new auditorium becomes operational.
Barry Johnson is the General Secretary.
