Shift in the show to local themes
By Kerri Carr
The 2004 ARTEXPRESS exhibition at the NSW Art Gallery until March 21 reflects a shift in thinking by HSC students.
Art Gallery of NSW secondary school programs and coordinator of ARTEXPRESS Tristan Sharp said the Art Gallery of NSW exhibition has works from 49 students on show, 31 of whom are public education students. Works include paintings, print making, photography, sculpture, texture and fibre, ceramics, film and animation.
"The works show an affirmation of students' confidence of who they are and what they see," Mr Sharp said.
He said this was different from past years where students had addressed more serious and depressing issues.
"They are celebrating the joy of humanity," Mr Sharp said.
"They've gone from looking at global issues to local issues," he added.
Mr Sharp said he thought this year's works "sit well among the professional artists".
Works from the 2003 HSC have also been on show in the windows of department store David Jones in Sydney (now closed), but more works are either on show or will be on show at different galleries throughout NSW throughout the year.
