Claudia Karvan to speak on asylum issues

Actor Claudia Karvan and Howard Glenn from A Just Australia will be guest speakers at a forum on March 12.

The topic will be the latest developments on asylum seekers and refugee policy.

Claudia Karvan made her acting debut at a very young age in High Tide with Judy Davis. Since this time Claudia has appeared in numerous productions on the stage, and screens both small and large. Most known to Australian households for her portrayal of Alex in the acclaimed television series The Secret Life of Us, she is to appear in the new television series Small Claims. Claudia also made her directorial debut on The Secret Life of Us. 2003 brought Claudia a Silver Logie for most outstanding actress in a drama series and AFI Award nomination for best actress in a leading role in a television drama.

A champion of many human rights issues, Claudia has been a Patron of A Just Australia since September 2002.

Howard Glenn has a long and diverse background in government, social justice and public issue campaigns for both government and the community sector.

Howard performed key roles in programs such as the establishment of the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission; establishment of a process of reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians; implementation of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody; and the ratification by Australia of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The event will be one of Federation's Friday Forums, a series held to discuss "the equity issues that matter to educators".

Pre drinks and nibblies will be served in the Federation Library at 5.30pm. The Forum, which will conclude about 7.30pm, will be held in meeting rooms 2 and 3, first floor, Teachers Federation House.

Please RSVP by March 5 to the Federation Library. Telephone (02) 9217 2113, fax (02) 9217 2481, e-mail: libdesk@nswtf.org.au.
