WorkCover changes notifications procedure
By Joan Lemaire
WorkCover has changed its procedures for the notification of work-related incidents.
WorkCover defines "serious incidents" as those which include a person being killed, an injury resulting in amputation or any event or circumstance that presents an immediate threat to life. These incidents must be reported directly to WorkCover on 131 050. The Department of Education and Training has issued a Memorandum (DN/04/00040) to principals and institute directors explaining the procedures for notification of WorkCover serious incidents and other workplace incidents, which result in an injury or illness where an employee or non employee is unfit to carry out his or her usual activities for seven calendar days.
It is important to note that the Department of Education and Training's definition of "serious incidents" (previously described as critical incidents) has not changed. Schools and colleges should notify the Department of Education and Training of all serious incidents which the Department of Education and Training describes as "an event which, causes disruption to an organisation; or creates a significant danger or risk that could traumatically affect individuals within the organisation; or impacts on the effective operation of workplaces; or attracts negative media attention or a negative public profile for the workplace or the Department of Education and Training."
Federation recommends that incidents of violence against teachers be reported as serious incidents to the Department of Education and Training.
Joan Lemaire is an Industrial Officer.
