Seeking leaders for Aboriginal education
Encouraging Aboriginal people to lead formed part of Federation's Aboriginal Conference on May 15.
Moruya Public School principal Brian Giles-Brown conducted a workshop on "Dare to lead -- taking it on: for the kids, for the profession, for the country". He has been seconded by the Australian Principals Associations Professional Development Council to run the initiative of the Indigenous Education Branch of the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training in NSW. The project supports principals in improving education outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and to work for reconciliation in their schools. Other workshops conducted at the conference dealt with legal, staffing and local/school issues, the Federal Election lobbying campaign, leave entitlements and salaries.
