Federal election advertising begins

Radio, TV, billboard and cinema advertising have commenced in the lead up to the federal election.

The following radio commercials have been played on metropolitan and regional stations:

"It is no co-incidence that the world's greatest democracies and most successful countries have the strongest public education systems. So why is the Howard Government spending ever increasing public funding on private schools when what our country needs is its great public education system.
"A stronger nation with opportunities for all
"Public education -- yes, it's time to give it more."

and

"Nearly 70 per cent of Australian children attend our great public schools. Yet, the Howard Government now spends twice as much direct federal Government funding on private school students than on public school students.
"This underhand Government policy, which was never properly explained to the Australian people, is undermining our children's education and our country's future. It must be stopped."

The confronting "FACTS-approved" AEU TV advertisement about direct federal government expenditure will be aired for six weeks from August 29 in the marginal seats of Eden-Monaro, Dobell and Paterson.

During the school holidays it will also be aired in cinemas in the marginal seats of Macarthur, Parramatta, Penrith, Richmond and Page.
