Superhero campaigns for public schools

By NSW Teachers Federation

A new superhero arrived on the scene on September 18 to call for a fair go for public schools from the Howard Government and (then) local Liberal Parramatta MP Ross Cameron.

Public Education Man, also known as Jeff Jackson, a mild-mannered teacher from Merrylands East Public School, aroused great interest when he joined other Parramatta Teachers Association members and supporters of public education distributing leaflets and asking shoppers in Parramatta to sign a petition calling on the Howard Government to provide fairer funding for public schools.

Public Education Man's intervention has obviously had considerable impact. In a little more than two hours, nearly 500 shoppers signed the petition and Ross Cameron, a staunch defender of the Howard Government's massive increases in funding for wealthy private schools like the local Kings School, appeared unlikely to hold his seat.
