New Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt

Refshauge now in charge of purse strings

NSW has its fourth Education Minister in a little more than three years following a Cabinet reshuffle sparked by the retirement of Treasurer Michael Egan.

Former Community Services and Ageing Minister Carmel Tebbutt is the new Minister responsible for education and training.

She replaces Deputy Premier Dr Andrew Refshauge who is now the Treasurer.

John Watkins replaced John Aquilina as Education Minister in November 2001, but Dr Refshauge took over the portfolio following the 2003 state election.

On January 19 Federation President Maree O'Halloran said: "It is our fervent hope that Dr Refshauge will ensure increased funds to public services in this state, particularly public education."

"In his role as Education Minister, Dr Refshauge constantly explained to teachers that our arguments had to be taken up with Treasury and he was unable to extract the resources required to ensure the highest quality provision of public education," Ms O'Halloran said.

However on January 20 the media reported Dr Refshauge would like to reduce tax.

"The Teachers Federation will continue its practice of regular meetings and briefings with the new Minister of Education and Training, Carmel Tebbutt, in the interests of our students and the public education system," Ms O'Halloran said.

"We call on the new Minister for Education and Training, Carmel Tebbutt, to increase government investment in our public schools and TAFE Colleges to ensure:
