From little things big things grow
By Angelo Gavrielatos
Guidelines and protocols for Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country have finally been published and distributed to NSW public schools and TAFE Institutes.
The development of these protocols and guidelines represents one of the most significant steps in the process of reconciliation.
As stated in the Director-General's memorandum which accompanied the distribution of the protocols and guidelines, "there is an expectation that the protocols will be used on appropriate occasions."
The occasions clearly include, but are not limited to, assemblies, social and formal occasions, when guests are introduced, at presentation or awards functions and at any event of significance.
Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country is already observed in many schools across the state and is being increasingly observed by politicians.
The development of the guidelines and protocols was envisaged by Federation's Aboriginal Members Committee and supported by the Federation.
Angelo Gavrielatos is the Senior Vice President.
