Time is running out on Eltis
By Jennifer Leete
The Department of Education and Training (DET) consultation with teachers on its proposed implementation of the recommendations of the Eltis Review is about to finish.
Professor Ken Eltis made recommendations about assessment and reporting in his report Time to Teach -- Time to Learn.
Very few teachers have responded during the consultation period, which closes at the end of term 1.
Federation is very critical of DET's consultation. Not enough copies of the consultation papers have been produced and they are complex and time consuming to respond to.
Not surprisingly, as of early March only 446 responses had been received.
DET consultation materials have the potential to lead to significant changes to assessment and reporting in K-6. Since this is a long standing area contributing to massive workload for primary teachers, the input of classroom teachers is sorely needed. If you can't lay your hand on a copy of DET consultation materials which are titled "Curriculum Programming, Assessing and Reporting to Parents Expectations and Support" please send an e-mail to eltis.consult@det.nsw.edu.au or send a fax to (02) 9886 7797.
Jennifer Leete is the Deputy President.
