IR Day of Action set for November 15
By Maree O’Halloran
The ACTU has called for a National Day of Action on Tuesday November 15. The Day of Action will include a Sky Channel broadcast to workers and community members across Australia.
The Sky Channel meeting will hear reports from the ACTU about the details of the Federal Government's industrial relations legislation and the future of the industrial relations campaign.
The National Day of Action is designed to build on the very successful NSW action on July 1 this year. It has the support of Unions NSW and will be preceded by a new round of television and radio advertisements.
The ACTU is waiting for a decision from the High Court about the validity of the Federal Government's advertising about industrial relations. The ACTU has argued that the Federal Government is misappropriating taxes since the proposed legislation has not even entered Federal Parliament. The Federal Government has argued that its advertisements were necessary because the union movement's "Your Rights at Work, Worth Fighting For" campaign had created a "state of emergency".
Federation's August Council supported the idea of a National Day of Action including Sky Channel. Federation is calling for rallies to be held in capital cities and regional centres following the broadcast.
The ACTU's industrial relations Sky Channel will be held a few weeks after the Federation's salaries Sky Channel. The State Government's credentials as an employer and the credibility of the NSW industrial relations system will be tested by its attitude to teachers.
