THA builds more accommodation
By Jeff Ainsworth
In 2006 the Teacher Housing Authority (THA) plans to build an additional house in Hay and a total of 21 villa units in Lake Cargelligo, Brewarrina, Condobolin, Boggabilla, Wilcannia, Goodooga and Buronga.
In 2005, the THA purchased dwellings in Quirindi, Hillston, Walgett and Condobolin and constructed a total of 13 villa units and two houses in Trangie, Menindee, Brewarrina, Walgett and Bourke.
The total value of the 2005 and 2006 work exceeds $7 million.
The THA's sole purpose is to provide a housing service for teachers. It operates independently of DET and all income is directed back into running the Authority, including the future acquisition, construction and maintenance of residential accommodation.
The Teacher Housing Authority (THA) is particularly important in rural and isolated areas where suitable private rental accommodation is not available.
As at December 2005, 1501 dwellings (830 houses and 671 villa units) were available for use by teachers in over 400 locations. THA dwellings in 6 and 8 transfer point locations attract a rental subsidy paid by the Department of Education and Training (DET).
The THA will spend a further $2.6 million in 2006-07 on the acquisition and construction of additional dwellings in towns where a need is established. The location of these projects will be determined using information provided by the Department of Education and Training (DET), local housing representatives, school principals, real estate agents and local councils.
The THA can be contacted on 1300 137 343. The THA website www.tha.nsw.gov.au provides access to an application for housing, transfer advice, vacancy advice and maintenance request forms. As well, a search for THA properties by locality can be made.
I am available to represent you on all Teacher Housing Authority matters and can be contacted by telephone on (02) 4929 4988 or fax (02) 4929 4509.
