Rallies on June 28 next phase in rights campaign

By Dennis Long

Unions NSW has outlined a four-step program of escalating action over the next 11 months to defeat the WorkChoices legislation.

The first step in the program was the holding of delegate meetings around NSW during the week of May 15 (see article at right).

The next step will be rallies to be held on Wednesday June 28 as part of the ACTU's Week of Action. Federation has endorsed these rallies, which are designed by Unions NSW to "highlight our public opposition" to the WorkChoices legislation "as one element of a much broader strategy to build an increased level of community opposition" to the changes.

The third step will be a National Day of Action in November. The program will culminate in a major public demonstration in Sydney in April 2007, hoped to be one of the largest in history.

On June 28 in the Sydney metropolitan area, the focus of the Federation will be to maximise attendance at a rally in Blacktown at 9am to be organised by Unions NSW.

Blacktown is in the federal electorate of Greenway. Member for Greenway Louise Markus voted for the new laws.

All Federation workplaces in the following school Association areas are authorised to stop work for half a day on June 28 to attend the Blacktown rally:

  • Blacktown
  • Blue Mountains
  • Camden-Campbelltown
  • Canterbury-Bankstown
  • Fairfield
  • Hawkesbury
  • Hornsby
  • Inner West
  • Liverpool
  • Lower Blue Mountains
  • Nepean
  • Parramatta
  • Ryde-Macquarie
  • St Marys-Mt Druitt
  • The Hills.

Schools in these Associations are authorised to provide minimal supervision.

Other Sydney Associations are authorised to send delegates from schools.

Rallies will also be held in some regional centres. Where rallies are organised by Unions NSW, similar stopwork procedures will apply as for the Blacktown rally.

Members who stop work on June 28 should attend one of the authorised rallies.
