Do something about poverty
By David Ferguson
Federation urges teachers to do something about poverty in their classrooms during Anti-Poverty Week, October 15 to 21.
Established in 2001 by the Social Justice Project at the University of New South Wales, Anti-Poverty Week was inspired by the UN's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
The core goal of Anti-Poverty Week is to encourage independent activities during the week by a wide range of groups and people. There is no 'official' Anti-Poverty Week policy on poverty issues. Participants are encouraged to express their views on the poverty-related topics which are of concern to them, leading to discussion and awareness raising.
Ideas and resources for activities in Anti-Poverty Week are available from the website www.antipovertyweek.org.au/about.html.
The Australian Education Union (AEU) promotes Anti-Poverty Week through representatives in each state and territory. The AEU website contains useful ideas for Anti-Poverty Week activities at www.aeufederal.org.au/Campaigns/antipoverty.html.
