Conference sessions cover a lot of ground
By Owen Hasler
Some 26 topics were covered in workshop sessions offered at the 2006 New Teachers Conference held on September 2.
About 130 new teachers were welcomed to the conference by General Secretary John Irving, followed by President Maree O'Halloran providing a detailed account of current campaigns and the means by which the Federation develops campaign strategies.
Four hour-long workshop sessions followed with participants having the choice of 26 topics including Federation activism within the workplace; introducing associations; campaigning in cyberspace; support for women's activism; shaping policy; supporting the work of teachers; working together in Aboriginal education; beginning teacher policy; and working for the union.
Many of the sessions saw lively involvement and debate within the groups.
The day concluded with an opportunity for those attending to address questions to the Federation Senior Officers, Maree O'Halloran, Angelo Gavrielatos and Bob Lipscombe, who responded in detail.
