Stop work on November 30 for workers’ rights

By Peter Wilson

Federation members are authorised to stop work on November 30 to attend National Day of Union and Community Action broadcasts to continue the fight against the Howard Government's extreme industrial relations laws.

Members who wish to attend rallies organised on the day are authorised to stop work for a longer period to attend such rallies.

Concerned citizens across Australia will meet at venues connected by Sky Channel for a broadcast from the Melbourne Cricket Ground, to commence at 8.30am.

All Sky Channel venues are now listed at http://rightsatwork.com.au/campaigns/nov30rally. All teachers are urged to consult this website to determine the venue that you will attend.

Fair employers to be acknowledged

Many teachers have connections with friends and relatives who are in business. You are urged to raise the Fair Employers Network with these acquaintances and encourage them to seek this public acknowledgement that they will not exploit their workforce.

Many employers do not feel comfortable about the attacks on the rights of employees and the undermining of the human rights of the Australian community.

The Community Endorsed Fair Employer Scheme has been established to provide an opportunity for employers who respect workers rights to reach out to the community.

The scheme will allow fair minded employers to join together as a Fair Employers Network. These businesses will be promoted online and through local and national publications. The community will support fair employers as customers because the community will support businesses that support local workers and their families.

A fair employer will undertake to:

1. maintain fair employment conditions
2. abide by employment related laws
3. not introduce Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs) in our workplaces
4. respect the rights of our employees to be members of a union
5. not convert employees to independent contractors in order to cut wages and conditions
6. endeavour at all times to deal with employees fairly.

More information about the Community Endorsed Fair Employer Scheme will be available from the Your Rights at Work Committees in local areas, and from Unions NSW on 1800 688 919.

Peter Wilson is Assistant General Secretary (Schools).
