Elections

NSW politicians must show their commitment

By Angelo Gavrielatos

The state election on March 24 represents an opportunity for politicians and aspiring politicians to demonstrate publicly before their constituents, their level of commitment to public education.

Consistent with the decisions of Annual Conference, Federation continues to build a campaign in pursuit of the union's policy objectives.

Federation has already:

  • engaged in extensive lobbying of politicians
  • published research papers by Inquiry into the Provision of Public Education in NSW chair Professor Tony Vinson and independent consultant to the NSW Public Education Alliance Dr Lyndsay Connors in support of the Alliance's priority demands
  • supported the TAFE Futures Inquiry which has further informed our TAFE campaign
  • funded extensive television, radio, print media and billboards advertising
  • distributed new corflute signs to be displayed on all schools and TAFE colleges.

In the context of the state election a Special Education Forum has been organised for February 20 at Parliament House.

A special state election supplement will be included in the journal arriving at members' homes in the week before the election. This special supplement will provide an analysis of education policy and industrial relations policy announcements. It will be informed by written responses to our priority demands and comments made by representatives of the ALP, Coalition, The Greens and Democrats at the March 10 meeting of Federation Council. Carmel Tebbutt (ALP), Brad Hazzard (Coalition), Lee Rhiannon (Greens) and Arthur Chesterfield-Evans (Democrats) have confirmed their attendance.

Angelo Gavrielatos is the Deputy President.
