On 2 December the NSW Industrial Relations Commission determined that NSW public school teachers will receive a 2.5% salary increase from the 1st January, without requiring the Federation to agree to a “no further claims” clause.

Last week 2.5% increases were gained in the IRC on a similar basis for teachers employed by the Board of Studies and Corrective Services, and on Friday your government agreed to increases for Adult Migrant English Teachers.

On Tuesday 13^th December, Federation met with the Minister. At that meeting, Federation argued forcefully that to not pay TAFE Teachers, Teachers in TAFE preschools, Institute Managers and Teachers in Bradfield College the 2.5% increase on a similar basis to which it will now be paid to all other NSW public school teachers, is victimisation of these teachers.

You will be aware that on 2 December the NSW Industrial Relations Commission determined that NSW public school teachers will receive a 2.5% salary increase from the 1st January, without requiring the Federation to agree to a “no further claims” clause.  It did this by simply varying the existing award and maintaining its nominal expiry date of 31 December, 2011. Thus, public school teachers will receive a 2.5% increase in their salaries in January with no trade off on conditions and the Federation will be still able to pursue further increases to ensure that teachers’ real incomes are not cut.

Despite these developments, and despite the fact that you as the Minister for Education issued a press release on 2 December in which you  “welcomed today’s decision from the Industrial Relations Commission that ensures government school teachers will receive a pay rise of 2.5% from January 2012” you are not paying TAFE teachers the same increase.

Minister why are you victimising TAFE teachers, Teachers in TAFE preschools, Institute Managers and teachers in Bradfield College teachers and not pay the same increase unless the Teachers Federation signs up to the government’s wages policy? All other Federation members will receive the increase without such a requirement.

Of course, it was your government’s decision, Minister to carry legislation to move TAFE teachers to the Federal Industrial Relation jurisdiction in October and manipulate TAFE teachers’ employment arrangements. Your government then deliberately delayed proclaiming the legislation until 1 December to disadvantage TAFE teachers and your latest position appears to be a continuation of your aim to deny TAFE teachers salary increases in line with public school teachers.

On Tuesday 13th December at a meeting with you, the Federation argued forcefully for you to pay TAFE Teachers, Teachers in TAFE preschools, Institute Managers and Teachers in Bradfield College the 2.5% increase on a similar basis to which it will now be paid to all other NSW public school teachers. You rejected that proposal.

Minister this is victimisation! I would ask that you to reconsider your position and make sure TAFE Teachers, Teachers in TAFE preschools, Institute Managers and Teachers in Bradfield College receive a pay increase of 2.5% from the 1st January 2012.
