OVERSEAS-TRAINED TEACHERS WISHING TO TEACH IN NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS.

(advice as at 10 August 2000)

3: What range of teaching does the DET co-ordinate?

The NSW DET co-ordinates public education provision in the following areas:

  • Pre-School Education (a small number of sites only)
  • Infants/Primary Education (Kindergarten - age 5 - to Year 6 - age 11)
  • Secondary Education (Year 7 - age 12 - to Year 12 - age 18)
  • Post School Education (TAFE).

There is a range of public education settings in NSW:

1. Pre-Schools are occasionally stand-alone, but are more often linked to, or on site with, an Infants/Primary School.

2. Infants / Primary Schools generally cater for students from Kindergarten - Year 6 on the one site. There are a small number of split sites, but these are still classified as one school.

3. Central Schools cater for students from Kindergarten to Year 10, or Kindergarten to Year 12, in one school setting. Some Central Schools are located on a split site, with Infants/Primary students in one location and secondary students on a separate site.

4. High Schools cater for students from Years 7 - 12 on one site.

5. Collegiates are a recent development in the public education provision, and follow a range of models including

    • Junior Colleges catering for Students from Years 7 - 10
    • Senior Colleges catering for students in Years 11 & 12
    • Integrated sites with school and TAFE facilities in the same location

6. Distance Education Centres provide access to education for remote and isolated students. Such Centres can be stand-alone but accommodated on a school site, or fully integrated with a school setting.

7. TAFE Colleges offering a range of courses, especially focussing on vocational education & training.

4: What are the qualification requirements?

All applicants for employment as a teacher with the DET will have their qualifications assessed by the Teacher Recruitment section of the School Staffing Unit. The Teacher Qualifications Advisory Panel may also be involved in this process.

As a minimum, applicants would be expected to have the equivalent of a recognised Australian teaching qualification. This would include appropriate content and training in the relevant teaching methodology.

In general terms, the qualification base and teaching area to which it relates are as follows:

Early Childhood Pre-School - Kindergarten (ages 3 - 5)
Infants Kindergarten - Year 2 (ages 5 - 7)
Primary Year 3 - Year 6 (ages 7 - 11)
Secondary Year 7 - Year 12 (ages 12 - 18)
TAFE As required by the subject (not age specific)

Approval to teach in government schools in NSW involves:

  • formal assessment of academic qualifications to ensure Departmental requirements are met;
  • assessment of personal suitability through attendance at an interview with a senior DET officer;
  • employment clearance through the Working with Children Check as required by New South Wales legislation;

In addition, an English language proficiency test (Professional English Assessment of Teachers) may be required for applicants who have completed the major part of their qualifications in a country where English is not the main language.

Finally, all overseas-trained teacher employment applicants are required to hold Australian citizenship - or a visa which allows them to work in Australia.

If you wish to seek further advice on qualification requirements, enquiries should be directed to
