Teachers campaign outside conference

As Labor's National Conference attendees walked into Sydney Convention Centre on the opening day of the conference on April 27 they were reminded about the importance of public education by Federation's large banner ("Public education -- A National Priority").

Badges with the same words were handed to delegates, along with an Australian Education Union brochure calling on the ALP to make public education a national priority.

ACTU President Sharan Burrow conducted a media conference in support of public education. Ms Burrow highlighted research which shows that internationally, public education "punches over its weight". She criticised the level currently being experienced by public schools. Drawing on the report commissioned by the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) which shows that public schools nationwide are under-funded to the tune of $2.9 billion per annum, she criticised almost 12 years of neglect by the Howard Government.

To coincide with the opening day of the conference Federation placed an advertisement in the Sydney Morning Herald asking what Federal Labor would do about the $2.9 billion annual shortfall in public school funding.
