Canoers to promote public education

Public education will be promoted once again at the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic on October 27 and 28.

TAFE TA President Geoff Turnbull, his nephew John Turnbull, and a number of other teachers (school and TAFE) including Claire Shanahan, David Broad, Renae Watkins and Lawrence Brayne will be competing as the Paddlers for Public Education Team.

The Hawkesbury Canoe Classic is an overnight ultra marathon canoe race of 111 kilometres from Windsor to Brooklyn.

Last year 634 paddlers took part and $222,000 was raised for the Arrow Foundation, a registered charity which provides funds for cancer research at St Vincent's Hospital. The Foundation's charter is to fight leukaemia and breast cancer through bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. A further sum of $30,600 was donated to other charities.

This year will be Mr Turnbull's 9th Hawkesbury Canoe Classic.

"In previous Classics I have raised over $2000 each year (a total of around $17,000) thanks largely to the support of my colleagues in TAFE and the Teachers Federation. Your contribution will enable the Arrow Foundation's important research to continue."

Paddlers are required to pay an entry fee of $80 to cover the cost of running the race which ensures that virtually all funds raised go directly to the Arrow Foundation.

Members of the Paddlers for Public Education Team are seeking sponsorship not by the kilometre but rather by way of donations (such donations are tax deductible).

There is also the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic Raffle -- tickets are $2 each and first prize is a $2500 travel voucher. If you would like to make a donation or buy some raffle tickets you can contact Geoff Turnbull at Randwick TAFE College on (02) 9469 8590 or email him at Geoff.Turnbull@det.nsw.edu.au.
