Campus handover will be opposed
by Peter de Graaff
Federation will oppose any attempt to hand over the Illawarra Institute of TAFE's art and media campus at the corner of Bourke and Verner Streets in Goulburn to Trinity Catholic College.
It has been suggested that the arts and media campus is closing due to complaints from staff relating to occupational health and safety issues, and the difficulty of students being able to access the library at the main campus located some distance away. The truth is that the Institute does not have the funds to maintain the building to an appropriate standard. This building needs a considerable amount of capital expenditure such as the installation of a fire sprinkler system.
The arts and media campus had its own specialist library with rare and valuable imprints until it was shut by the Institute as a cost-saving measure. The canon of the Carr Government has been to provide the minimal amount of funding, causing facilities to become run down and therefore needing to be closed.
Peter de Graaff is a TAFE Organiser.
