More than 80 parents, teachers and principals gathered in Austinmer on September 5 to celebrate the achievements of public schools and lobby for greater government investment.

Organised by North Illawarra Teachers Association, the dinner included Department of Education and Training regional director Graeham Kennedy, school education director Chris Carroll, regional P&C president Sally Ray, state Labor Heathcote MP Paul McLeay, federal Labor Cunningham MP Sharon Bird, and federal Greens candidate Michael Organ.

For the fourth time in a year, Liberal Party Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells did not accept an invitation to attend a function to celebrate public education.

Federation Deputy President Angelo Gavrielatos gave an inspiring speech on the need for increased funding for public education and urged supporters to continue lobbying politicians.

School captain Celli Lloyd impressed everyone with a fine speech about the wonderful attributes of Bulli High School. Taylour'e Organ from Woonona High then delighted the audience with her singing performance.

To conclude a very convivial and successful evening, Ms Bird and Mr Organ drew warm applause when they signed the Federation's pledge to support increased targeted funding for public schools in Cunningham.
