Death and disability award application

By Brenda Seymour

Federation has notified the Industrial Relations Commission of its intention to make an application for a separate death and disability award as part of its superannuation campaign.

The union's draft application is currently with the Department of Education and Training, and the Industrial Relations Commission.

Federation wants to run this major case because:

1. The death and disability benefits received by public education employees affected by this application are inadequate.
2. The death and disability benefits are greater for public education employees who are members of the State Superannuation Scheme compared with other public education employees.
3. The cost of improved death and disability benefits for public education employees can best be provided through group insurance provided for in an award.
4. The proposed award would provide benefits to public education employees appropriate to a risk assessment of their occupation and industry of employment.
5. The proposed award would provide a strong rehabilitation component.

Brenda Seymour is Assistant General Secretary (Research and Industrial).
