Voting is deadly
by Nicole Major Gold Coast Titans player Shannon Walker was among the 500 people who signed the Your Rights at Work petition to ALP leader Kevin Rudd at the Your Rights at Work/Voting is Deadly stall at the Aboriginal rugby league knockout held in Lismore on the October long weekend. The footballer was also one of a number of people who registered to vote. The Your Rights at Work petition is about industrial relations and the Voting is Deadly campaign encourages Aboriginal people to register and vote in elections. The knockout is a major event on the calendar for Aboriginal communities around the state and this year's event drew 28 men's teams and approximately 30 women's and children's teams, as well as about 2000 spectators. This was a great opportunity to get the Your Rights at Work and Voting is Deadly message further into Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal people from all over the state were keen to sign the petition and get rid of the Howard Government and its industrial relations legislation. Hundreds of Your Rights at Work shirts, mugs, stickers and leaflets were handed out over the four days. The Your Rights at Work/Voting is Deadly stall was manned for four days by Federation Aboriginal Education Coordinator Charline Emzin-Boyd and Aboriginal teachers and teachers aides from around the North Coast, as well as the Your Rights at Work marginal seat coordinator Paul Doughty. Many thanks to the following people who volunteered their time to help run the stall: Aboriginal teachers Fiona Hyland, Marcia Browning, Troy Williams, Shanene Phillips, Rod Kilby, Steve Collins, Isobel Craigie, Wendy Knight and Glen Cook; Aboriginal teachers aides Christine Morgan and Arlene Roberts; and Aboriginal Education Consultative Group President Carlo Svagelli. Nicole Major is a Country Organiser.
