What can I do if I don’t agree with the DET advice?

In negotiations Federation insisted that there needed to be a process for teachers to be consulted on the advice provided.

DET has established a process for members to raise concerns by referring them to the Equipment in Schools Committee using a fax pro forma on page 26 of the consultation package. Any comments must be forwarded by the end of term 3. It is vital that where members believe that adherence to DET advice will adversely affect teaching and learning programs or impact on workload or safety that they express their concerns by the end of term 3 to DET, and send a copy to Federation. Given the commitment for ongoing consultation, changes may be made to DET usage controls if there is sufficient concern expressed by teachers in schools.

The occupational health and safety legislation provides for consultation; it requires the DET to value and acknowledge the contribution of employees. It does not require agreement. The occupational health and safety legislation requires employees to cooperate with the employer in meeting requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulation. Federation will use members' advice to ensure that DET meets these legislative requirements.
