Exciting year for public education

by Diane Hague

One million dollars has been committed to a major publicity campaign for schools and TAFE, through Federation's Public Education Fund.

Under the title, "Making our great public education system even greater", Federation's schools' publicity campaign is aimed initially at building support for public education and public demand for greater investment of government funding in our public schools. The campaign was launched on May 14, the beginning of Education Week.

The first part of the campaign is radio and television advertisements, strip ads in metropolitan newspapers and posters for schools celebrating public education and its achievements and competitive advantages. Later this year, the campaign will move into a more political phase where Federation will present its key demands for improvements in public education in the lead up to the state election in March 2007. Annual Conference in July will develop the key demands. Billboard posters and new corflute banners for schools will be part of the publicity.

Cornerstones, the conference for public education being held on September 22 and 23, provides the opportunity for a communiqué that will move the public education campaign forward.

Federation's TAFE publicity campaign, under the title "Secure Our Future. Invest in TAFE Now", is concentrating on the skills shortage and the need for more government resources being invested in TAFE.

The campaign includes a new script for the very successful television advertisement that was run a couple of years ago. The ad will be run in regional NSW for two weeks from the week beginning June 4.

A newspaper advertisement entitled, "With TAFE you can achieve practically anything," which features a human pyramid of workers trained by TAFE, is being run over three weeks in the Sun-Herald in May.

A website "IsupportTAFE" is being developed and will be launched later this year. The purpose of the website is to allow supporters of TAFE to register support and to receive information and lobby for TAFE.

A new billboard poster and corflute banners have been developed and these will be put up later this year.

Diane Hague is the Administration Officer (Media and Communications).
