Applying for an exemption from union feesUnder some circumstances Federation will reduce or exempt fees. By John Dixon Financial members who go on leave without pay or go on a form of part-time paid leave, for example half pay long service or half pay maternity leave, can apply for a reduction in their membership fees for the period of leave. To receive this reduction in membership fees members need to apply to the Federation in advance, and need to supply copies of relevant leave approval documents from the relevant employer. To assist members, Federation has a fee exemption/reduction form that takes members through the necessary steps to make the process simpler and allow the Federation to process requests. Employers such as TAFE and the NSW Department of Education and Training do not inform Federation when you are on leave, retire or when your number of days worked per week changes. Members, therefore, need to inform Federation of such changes.
Procedure to be followedFinancial members wishing to apply for a reduction/exemption for any period of unpaid leave should apply in writing, in advance, and attach relevant leave approval documents from the employer. If members are not able to provide the leave approval documentation from the employer they should provide a statutory declaration witnessed by a Justice of the Peace which sets out the exact dates of the leave.
Extended/amended leaveShould members amend/extend their period of unpaid leave, they must provide copies of the leave approval documents for the extended/amended periods in advance to be eligible for extension of exemption of fees.It is the member's responsibility to inform Federation of any change or amendment to their leave when they are seeking a reduction/exemption.
Types of leaveLeave without pay: Members receive an exemption from fees for periods of leave without pay. Members are required to pay the casual fee if they are working as a casual.Maternity leave: Exemption of fees can be granted for periods of maternity leave without pay only. An exemption of fees cannot be granted for full paid maternity leave. A 50 per cent reduction of fees can be granted for periods of maternity leave if taken at half pay only. Part-time maternity leave without pay: Members are eligible for a reduction of fees. The fees payable will be calculated on a pro-rata basis according to the days/hours worked. Long service leave: Members on long service leave full pay are not entitled to a reduction or exemption, however, members taking long service leave at half pay for one month or more are eligible for a 50 per cent reduction of fees. Sick leave (no pay): Members on sick leave no pay should contact the membership section as these exemptions are usually determined on a case-by-case basis. John Dixon is Assistant General Secretary (Communications and Administration).
