Forum to reflect on apology

By Charline Emzin-Boyd

A public forum reflecting on the Federal Government's apology to the Stolen Generations will be held on May 27 in Federation's auditorium at 37 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills.

The forum will be hosted by the NSW Reconciliation Council, NSW Sorry Day Committee and Department of Aboriginal Affairs.

Members of the Stolen Generations will be speaking, along with representatives from the NSW people's movement for reconciliation. Drinks and nibbles will be served from 5.30pm with the forum to start at 6.30pm. RSVP adrian.craig@daa.nsw.gov.au by May 16. For more information please visit www.nswrecon.com.

National Reconciliation Week runs every year from May 27 to June 3. The NSW theme for Reconciliation Week 2008 is "Sorry - A New Beginning", in light of the Federal Government's apology to the Stolen Generations. The acknowledgement of our true history and the delivery of an apology for past government policies from the Federal Government symbolises the first step in a shared healing process. The apology represents an important step in the process of reconciliation between the Indigenous and broader Australian community.

Charline Emzin-Boyd is the Aboriginal Education Coordinator.
