Labor Council supports the peace movement
Labor Council carried the following resolution on February 6.
The Labor Council's firm view is that war is not a solution to achieve international peace, security and stability. Recourse to war is never justified before all non-violent solutions have been pursued.
The Labor Council of NSW supports the international disarmament of weapons of mass destruction and believes the United Nations is the most appropriate and capable institution for achieving these ends. In the case of Iraq and weapons of mass destruction, we believe the United Nations and its weapons inspectors must be given more time and support to resolve the process of disarmament peacefully.
As an attack on Iraq will cause widespread death and destruction, increase insecurity and poverty in the world and threaten a wider conflict in the Middle East and elsewhere, including the South-East Asian region, the Labor Council declares its opposition to war in Iraq. The blockade continues to inflict misery on innocent people in Iraq, and so should be lifted immediately.
We recognise that the pressure currently being exerted on Iraq by the United States, Britain and Australia to disarm, is placing the United Nations under duress, which could pressure it to make a hasty decision to go to war.
We believe there is currently insufficient evidence to justify a military attack against Iraq. At present the weapons inspectors have not discovered weapons of mass destruction and no link has been established between the Iraqi regime and al Qaida.

Labor Council will continue to participate in the Walk Against the War Coalition and encourage its affiliates to do the same, to help support the peace movement in NSW and Australia. We will also reinvigorate the Labor Council Peace Committee as a cross-union body to help deepen this campaign in our unions.
