Australian Volunteers help Maldives victims
Australian teachers are making a modest contribution to the redevelopment of communities in the Maldives following the tsunami on December 26. Within three weeks 15 teachers had been recruited, briefed and mobilised to be in place as close as possible to the start of the school year in the Maldives. The project is being coordinated by the Australian Government's aid agency, AusAID, with the assistance of Australian Volunteers International. The Australian teachers on this project are working in the outer islands, assisting Maldivian teachers to ensure that the school year starts smoothly, and providing trauma counselling to children. While the world's attention has been focused recently on the Indian Ocean and the countries affected by the tsunami, there are many other communities in need of the assistance of education professionals across the globe. Australian Volunteers International (AVI) works in Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Middle East and provides many opportunities for qualified Australian teachers to make a contribution: from teaching English as a second language, to maths and science teaching, physical education, special education, and of course, teacher training. Australian Volunteers International's overseas employer partners want professionals to help them develop the capacity of their schools and to train their teachers.
