TAFE matters

by Phil Bradley

Workplace evidence and assessment validation

Federation has not received the assurances sought from TAFE regarding the legal situation relating to teacher members who validate workplace evidence for apprentices and trainees by signing off certifications of competency provided by workplace employers. Often teachers are unable to ascertain the extent of the delivery and accuracy of assessment in the workplace and in the circumstances and they should not be expected to sign off that the evidence provided has been validated. Furthermore, members should not undertake any additional validation work unless provided with adequate release/compensation to do this.

Audits in TAFE

Members continue to be concerned about increasing requirements to audit for International Standards Organisation, compliance with Australian Quality Teaching Framework for Registered Training Organisation status and so on. Federation has asked TAFE to rationalise these audits and until agreement is reached, it is strongly recommended that no member participate in any such audit without adequate release.

New teacher education/training

Federation has advised DET/TAFE that it is unacceptable for beginning teachers without an initial degree to be offered release and support to obtain only a Graduate Diploma in Adult Education. This practice is educationally unsound as these teachers are not graduates. Under TAFE policy they should be supported to complete a Bachelors Degree in Adult Education or equivalent over two years. Any member who is aware of this inappropriate practice being proposed should contact their Federation Organiser.

Phil Bradley is the Assistant General Secretary (Post-School Education).
