May Day march and rally May 6

The march and rally to mark May Day will be held on Sunday May 6.

The march will leave Hyde Park North at noon, travelling down Market Street, George Street, Bathurst Streets, Elizabeth Street and then return to Hyde Park North for speeches.

There will be a jumping castle, face painting and balloons for the kids.

The May Day Toast will be held at Trades Hall on Tuesday May 1, the same day that the refurbished Trades Hall will be re-opened. Unions NSW Secretary John Robertson will speak at the toast event. The time for the toast is yet to be determined.

For more details closer to the event contact Sydney May Day Committee Assistant Secretary Jaime Midson at the Maritime Union of Australia on (02) 9264 5024.

Modern celebration of May Day developed from United States workers' struggle for the eight hour day, achieved in 1886.

In Australia workers in some industries claimed the eight hour day in the 1850s.

The first recorded May Day march in Australia was held in Barcaldine in 1891 by striking shearers.
