Show Mercy (formerly Rights Campaign for Asylum Seekers) has launched an educational video called Punished not Protected.

Launched January 20, the 20 minute video is a film in four parts which examines current government policy and its effects on asylum seekers and temporary protection visa holders, as seen through the eyes of refugees, concerned citizens and leading Australians -- all of whom are committed to seeking a fairer and more just treatment of asylum seekers.

Show Mercy is a non-profit incorporated association with a charitable fundraising authority, focusing on the rights and treatment of asylum seekers in detention and in the community. As a group Show Mercy engages the arts, media and academics in carefully targeted initiatives to raise public awareness and change current policies on asylum seekers.

Sales and distribution of Published not Protected is through Ronin Films.

Email orders to orders@roninfilms.com.au, postal orders: PO Box 1005, Civic Square Canberra ACT 2608, phone (02) 6248 0851, fax (02) 6249 1640. Website www.showmercy.info.

Other initiatives undertaken by Show Mercy include:

  • a 10 minute video released 002, Show Mercy in Our Community, sold to over 350 schools
  • research into temporary protection visa holders and letter writing to MPs
  • assistance to the arts and media with research and documentary material
  • fundraising
  • organising dinners and food donations for the Asylum Seekers Centre in Sydney and bringing in volunteers to share in cooking and eating with clients at the Centre.
  • supporting and active with the Temporary Protection Visa Legal Assistance Project, run by the Refugee Advice and Casework Services.
The organisation has many members who volunteer time and energy to different initiatives throughout the year.
